Why a Parent Teen Driving Challenge?

For 2006 Maine had 188 Motor Vehicle Fatalities*

For Young Drivers 16-19 this translated to:

  • 26 involved in fatal crashes
  • 17 drivers died
  • 26 drivers caused 30 deaths
  • 5 of the 26 had a positive BAC
  • 8 of the 30 deaths were wearing a seat belt

According to a recent AAA & Seventeen Magazine survey of more than 1000 teens:

  • 61% admitted to risky driving habits
  • 46% text message when driving
  • 51% talk on cell phones
  • 58% drive with friends in the car
  • 40% exceed the speed limit by 10 miles or more
  • 11% admit to drinking/drug use when driving

Maine ranked 3rd in 2004 and 2nd in 2005 in the country for the highest % of young driver deaths from car crashes.*

  • Following too closely
  • Poor space management
  • Bad habits
  • Distracted
  • Aggressive driving
